Preserving a Legacy
Origins of the Louisiana History Museum Building
The building housing the Louisiana History Museum and Alexandria Genealogical Library began as the Alexandria Public Library in 1907, funded by a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie matched by local businessman S.S. Bryan. The funds required the city to provide a site and maintenance indefinitely. Designed by Crosby & Henkel of New Orleans and built by Caldwell Brothers, the building was constructed to advance culture and learning. Designated as the Alexandria Historical and Genealogical Library and Museum in 1971, it was remodeled in the 1970s and 2003 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
